Gratitude for Parents

Allahummaj'alhu lahu faratan wa dhukhran wa salafan wa ajra. Allahummaj'alhu shafi'an liwalidayh.

O Allah, make this child a forerunner, a treasure stored, a predecessor, and a reward for them. O Allah, make this child an intercessor for their parents.

SahihSahih Muslim 963, Abu Dawud 3180

This du'a is for parents who have lost a child — part of the janazah (funeral) prayer for a child. "Farat" is someone sent ahead of a caravan to prepare water and provisions at the next stop. "Dhukhran" — a treasure stored up with Allah. "Shafi'an" — an intercessor on the Day of Judgement. The Prophet ﷺ said: "No Muslim couple loses three children except that Allah will admit them to Paradise through His mercy." A child who dies before the parents is not lost — they are sent ahead to prepare their parents' welcome in Jannah and to intercede for them. The deepest consolation for the deepest loss.
