Gratitude for Parents

O Allah, grant me the ability to be dutiful to my parents — whether alive or deceased — and do not deprive me of their reward.

AtharGeneral du'a based on birrul-walidayn hadith

Birr (dutifulness) to parents does not end with their death. For living parents: serve them, obey them, speak gently, provide for them. For deceased parents: pray for them, give charity on their behalf, maintain their friendships, fulfill their promises. The addition "do not deprive me of their reward" acknowledges that serving parents carries immense ajr (reward) — the Prophet ﷺ ranked it second only to prayer performed on time when asked about the best deeds (Bukhari 527). This du'a asks for the tawfiq (ability) to be dutiful in both states — because birr requires help from Allah; your nafs will resist it, and life's distractions will try to pull you away.
