Gratitude for Parents

Allahummaj'alni barran biwalidayya warzuqni ridahuma wa a'inni 'ala khidmatihima bima yurdika 'anni

O Allah, make me dutiful to my parents, grant me their pleasure, and help me serve them in a way that pleases You.

AtharGeneral du'a based on Quranic commands for birrul-walidayn

Birr (dutifulness) is the Quran's command — "And We have enjoined upon man birr toward his parents" (29:8). Birr is more than respect; it is active, tender, consistent care — especially when they are elderly and dependent. The addition of "help me serve them in a way that pleases You" acknowledges two audiences: your parents and Allah. Sometimes what parents want and what Allah wants differ (if they call you to shirk, for example — Quran 31:15), but in all other matters, their pleasure IS Allah's pleasure. The Prophet ﷺ said: "The pleasure of the Lord is in the pleasure of the parents" (At-Tirmidhi 1899). This du'a asks for divine help because birr requires sabr — and sometimes you lose patience despite your love.
